The La Loma course is one of two 18-hole, championship courses at the historic Fort Sam Houston. The facility hosted the Texas Open in the '50s and '60s, making it the only military facility to ever host a PGA event. La Loma has its fair share of challenges but overall the other course at the club, Salado del Rio, is the more demanding of the two. The fairways are tree-lined but not as tight as on the other golf course, lending a more forgiving quality to La Loma. The greens are medium in both size and speed and there are strategically placed bunkers throughout the course. Fort Sam Houston also has a practice chipping green and a lighted driving range for golfers to use.

Wouldn't expect this from the finest military in the world....

La Loma is a sad example of military golf. The lack of maintenance is obvious and most likely longstanding. The Fort Sam Golf app is useless as it hasn't been updated in at least 2 years, however, it includes an interesting 5 page USGA report of La Loma course conditions and their recommendations for improvement. Not sure if any were followed. Tee boxes, fairways, rough, greens and bunkers all need much improvement.(even the flags are worn and ragged) On a positive note, the golf cart paths are nice.

Fort Sam Golf Now Restricted

We have been playing the two eighteen hole courses here since 2012.
On March 4, 2019 Fort Sam Houston has become a restricted area.
Golfers who are not carrying official DOD IDs need to have a permit issued by the Fort Sam Visitors Center.
They can issue either a four day pass or a six month pass card.
The base MIS computer has been down since last weekend so they can only issue four day passes.

The La Loma course is more wide open and has an easy flow.
The fairways have bare spots and there are weeds all over. The rough consists of grass and weeds had become
Very thick. It is easy to lose your tee shot if you land in the rough.
The greens and tees are below average for the area.

On a balmy but windy spring day an early tee time was essential.
After we teed off, about 15 groups were lined up on the first tee.
This is a popular course for retired military and it is handy to most areas of San Antonio.

Great value and friendly place

Had a great time @ ft Sam Houston golf club. The only thing that could've made me happier would have been to golf with Major Tom. But he was called to Honduras

Second time, already booked again

This was our second time at La Loma. The weather wasn't great but the friendly staff and great layout more than made up for the grey skies. We have already booked another round here, great value.

Don’t play here

The course is not very good and the staff is so rude. It is a military course that has hot deals but they treat you like dirt if you not military. I will NEVER go back to this course again even if it offers the $20 hot deal. The fairways are terrible and the greens are worse. The layout is fine though. There are a million other courses in San Antonio that are better and have a reasonable price.

Golf round

The course layout was nice, the fairways were not in very good condition, but the greens were good. We (a threesome) were stuck behind a fivesome on the back nine and as a result took 2 and a half hours to play it. ( the front nine took an hour and a half) If fivessomes are allowed then there should be a Marshall present to monitor pace of play.. All in all very good value..

Historic Course

I was keenly aware of the venerable history of La Loma-- 1937 A.W. Tillinghast design; its the only military course to host a PGA event; and site of Sam Snead's 1950 Texas Open victory win. Ample use of bunkers, thoughtfully placed. Greens were a little beat up-- does anyone repair divot marks any more? Fairways were in decent condition for this time of year-- falling leaves, loads of rain. Plenty of decisions for carry through or layup shots. Since Fort Sam has opened its doors, civilians now have a chance to follow in the footsteps of many professionals who played in the Texas Open championships played at La Loma in the 1950s and 1960s. I will be back.

What a Mess

Do know where the screw up was, either the golf course or golf now. But when I checked in the told me I would be playing on a different course and the times were double booked. Henceforth a real mess at the first tee. Now through in no starter and things almost got ugly. The course was good and the greens were fast. Maybe next time they’ll get their act together!

Salado

We had booked La Loma but there was a Junior tournament that was scheduled before our tee time. We moved to Salado to make sure we didn’t weren’t on the heels of the boys and girls playing in the tourney.

Nice course layout. Lots of doglegs, so club choice is important. Greens were aerated in the past few months, most greens were grown back but one or two still had some signs of the punching (our Texas summer is hard on them). Fun course and I would definetly go back.

Course was pretty beat up

The course was pretty beat up. The fairways are in bad shape, super bumpy, dry with dead grass, and with weeds overgrowing. The greens however were in decent condition compared to the fairways. This course needs some serious upkeep for it to compete with the other munis in San Antonio.
