Fort Sam Houston is home to two 18-hole courses, Salado Del Rio and La Lorna. The Salado del Rio course is the more scenic of the two, offering spectacular views of the rustic countryside. The historic facility boasts some famous players including Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer. The layout is also more difficult than the other championship course at the club due to the presence of numerous blind shots and water hazards. Both Fort Sam Houstan golf courses feature tight, tree-lined fairways and greens that are medium in both size and speed. In addition to the two golf courses, Fort Sam Houston also houses extensive practice facilities including a practice chipping green and lighted driving range.

Dry and Sometimes Confusing

When my friend and I played, though it was winter golf, the course was very dry and only a few greens rolled well. The course has parts which are under construction, such as number 16 ( I think) which had a cup placed in the middle of the fairway. While I did enjoy the creativity of that hole it was impossible to put on. Not the worst course for its value, but there is better golf in SA.

This course has many challenging features

Played long after 5 days wet weather. You have many doglegs. Greens were slow due to dampness. Great fun and met some real nice people.

About like a d cent muni

Quite a number of blind holes on he Salgado course and a few holes where we had to ask directions to the next tee. Not a very visitor-friendly course. We even had to ask directions to the pro shop upon arrival in the parking area. Fairways were rather hard which meant that club selection was problematic at times and greens had grass that either caused a fast or slow roll depending on which way the grass was mowed. The layout is Interesting and there were some nice elevation changes.

Dry, Dry, Dry

Was very disappointed in the course conditions when we played. Fairways were dry and thin. Rough's grass was weeds and rocks. Only a few greens had thick grass. The only thing that made them puttable was they were kept moist. Played Silverhorn the next day, what a big difference.

Good condition....good value

Haven’t played Salado in several months and was pleasantly surprised that the course conditions were really good. 20.00 after 12 is a great deal!

Step Back in Time

There are two 18 hole golf courses at Fort Sam.
The original 18 was created by A.W.Tillinghast, an iconic golf course architect in 1929,
In 1937 the only PGA event ever played on a US military installation was here at the Texas Open. Sam Snead and Palmer have played here.
In mid 1976 the original 18 holes were divided between the two new revamped courses. Kevin Tucker Design Group handled the redesign.
Las Lomas includes holes 1 through 10 from the old course, and Salado Del Rio includes hole #1 and 13 to 18 of the 1929 design.
We played the Salado del Rio course on a Saturday AM.
The greens and fairways are as good as any in town. The putting surface was a thick green carpet and rolled straight.
This course wind among a forest of huge trees. Trees play an important part in so many green approaches, this can be areal challenge.
There are creeks throughout these fairways and lots of
hidden lakes to catch the errant golf shot.
There's a big practice facility here. The placement of drinking water stations and bathrooms is about the best in the area.
Salado del Rio has scenic views, a tricky parkland layout,
great playing conditions, and good pace of play.
Fort Sam Houston golf is a fine golfing experience in San Antonio. It's heads above the local municipal courses.
